Sometimes to fully appreciate where a story is, you have to see where it's been. Seeing how Regina immediately fell in love with Henry makes her a more sympathetic character. Sure, she adopted him for the wrong reasons, but ultimately her love for Henry overrode her selfishness as well as her desire to return him. It was delightful to see Lana Parrilla get to play with that sort of joy – it's different than any other sort of happiness we've previously seen in Regina.
Parrilla delivered across the board. We saw Regina at three different points in time, and she maintained the same personality but carved out distinct voices for each point in her history. It worked and strengthened your feelings about the evil character on Neverland. Additionally, Parrilla had her best scene in the series with the "no regrets" line. It was perfect.
