Wasteland 2 Aims to Blend Fallouts Past and Present IGN All

Wasteland 2 stands between different worlds of role-playing games. First, there's the original Wasteland, released in 1988, a forward-looking game at the time, but still one built on menu combat and limited movement options. Then there's 1997's Fallout, a spiritual successor to Wasteland that helped usher in the modern age of RPGs. And finally, there are all the genre titans since—the Dragon Ages and Skyrims and new Fallouts—that have taken the ideas of their predecessors and made them less awkward to play and more cinematic.


Wasteland 2 is an attempt to bridge most of the different historical forms of video game RPGs into a single experience, which is part of what makes it so exciting. But, after playing the semi-open beta recently released onto Steam, it's also clear that being all things to all RPG fans is going to be very difficult for the final version of Wasteland 2 to pull off.
