Just when you thought Charles Soule’s Swamp Thing couldn’t get any better, he goes and pulls an unexpected surprise like this. Seriously, the place where this comic book starts and ends is so wildly different that there’s no way anyone could have called it. You could say the same thing about a lot of these Swamp Thing issues, actually. The best thing about the surprises is that even though they are unexpected, they all make perfect sense within the rules of the world Soule has built. And they they always manage to move the story forward in a mind-bending new direction. Add in Jesus Saiz’s brilliant artwork doused in Matthew Wilson’s brilliant palette of greens and you’ve got an issue that proves we were right in nominating Swamp Thing as one of the Best Series of 2013. At this rate, we’ll be nominating it in 2014, too.
