Having devoted the first four issues of this series to a frantic, ongoing struggle for survival, Rick Remender slows things down a bit in Black Science #5. The Anarchist League of Scientists is down one member and still struggling to return to their home dimension. But just when success seems within reach, a new complication arises and McKay's children are kidnapped.
Issue #5 does what it needs to as far as allowing the characters (and readers) a slight breather while simultaneously expanding the world and offering a greater sense of the challenges and consequences facing our our heroes ahead. And Remender is able to explore the various character dynamics a bit more now that they aren't fleeing in mortal terror from one panel to the next. Ultimately, this issue lacks a bit of the pizzazz and wow factor of the previous four, even with the kidnapping element. The sense of danger isn't as great, and their current stomping ground is less interesting or unique than what we've seen in the past. But this series can't be one nonstop action fest for its entire lifespan.
