Tom Taylor’s Earth 2 is continuing to take our heroes down the path to an inevitable war. Great characterization and exciting action sequences continue to be the hallmarks of this series, along with some interesting meta commentary as well. While some fans may be getting a little frustrated with the slower pace of this series, there is no doubt that we are being led down a very interesting path.
Lois Lane saying she doesn't need rescuing is just one great example of Taylor’s meta commentary that is helping to make this book a must read. Taylor is spitting in the face of the “damsel in distress” trope that is outdated, offensive, and often used. Not only did he immediately “un-fridge” her upon his takeover of this book, but it seems that he is also making her an important feminist mouthpiece. Another interesting point in his commentary is with Superman. Though Taylor is now writing two “evil” versions of the character, he is not shy about showing his readers how he personally feels Superman should be portrayed. With Val, the new Kryptonian character, it seems that Taylor has finally found a way to write a more classic iteration of Superman. Val’s actions here are selfless, heroic, and uncompromising. He may even be a direct response to a recent film version that many fans found controversial.
