DC is clearly on a mission to see how many simultaneous weekly comics readers can tolerate. The New 52: Futures End is the second of three weekly comics DC is launching this year. But this book may be a tougher sell than Batman Eternal. While the roster of talent is impressive enough, it lacks the immediacy and sense of relevance that Eternal offers in spades. Perhaps Futures End offers a glimpse into the DCU as it may exist five years in the future, but the concept and setting only make this seem like another alternate future, Elseworlds-style comic. It's a solid read so far, but it doesn't come across as a particularly vital one.
For all intents and purposes, Futures End #1 is actually issue #2. The FCBD special released over the weekend is the real starting point for this series, introducing the New 52's version of Batman Beyond and laying out the stakes of the conflict and his mission. It's always annoying when an issue #1 isn't actually issue #1, but at least you won't have to spend any extra money to get caught up.
