With Otto Octavius having taken up the Spider-Man mantle in one universe and Miles Morales in another, it's been a surprisingly long time since we've had any new Spider-Man tales featuring the one and only Peter Parker. The new Amazing Spider-Man #1 is all about welcoming Peter back into the role while also setting the stage for the challenges in the months ahead. It marks a comfortable return to normalcy for Dan Slott's ongoing Spider-Man saga in some ways. There's a palpable sense of optimism and brightness to both the script and art. But Slott hardly ignores the ramifications of Otto's reign, good and bad, so this new series isn't a complete 180 in tone or style.
Following a brief opening segment aimed at teasing Spidey's role in Original Sin, Slott and Humberto Ramos launch into their main story, which is set the morning after the events of "Goblin Nation" and Peter's return. New York is still very much in turmoil after dealing with the Green Goblin threat and Mayor Jameson's resignation. Peter, meanwhile, is rapidly discovering how much his life has changed while he was away - a doctorate degree, his own company, a steady girlfriend he's never met. And the fact that half the people in his life now despise him. Slott plays all of this mostly for laughs. After so many months where Spider-Man's humorless was the source of the book's humor, it's nice to settle back into the old groove and have Peter crack wise and deal with his eternally cursed Parker luck.
