Boardwalk Empire: "Cuanto" Review IGN All

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode follow...


"Maybe I'm a fed. Maybe I'm a bigamist. Maybe I'm a murderer on a run."


I don't think there'll be much arguing if I say that Boardwalk is a great series. But I do think that it's often given a pass on certain things because of the beautiful costumes, ironically juxtaposed music, and overall gangster appeal. Which isn't to say that "Cuanto" was a bad episode at all, but when so many things are telegraphed - when you can spot where a particular scene or story's headed before it's able to reveal itself on its own terms - moments of tension feel wasted.


Like last week's country home invasion with Chalky and Melvin where an episode's worth of intensity wound up playing out predictably, "Cuanto" had its share of "shocking moments that weren't surprises." Sure, I'll watch a guy kill another guy with a hammer, but when it feels, in the end, like that was the only way the entire mini-arc could have ended, one can't help but feel cheated. So here, with Capone (getting high off his own celebrity status like never before), you knew that he was going to kill someone with that statue of the Empire State Building as soon as you saw it. And worse, thanks to Goodfellas' "I'm funny how?" scene, you also knew who'd be getting impaled.
