Love her or hate her, Clara was always a companion whose very introduction made character growth problematic.
With the second half of Season 7's central plot primarily hung around the mystery of her 'Manic timey-wimey-flirty-reincarnating pixie girl' schtick, and the subsequent mega-specials spent reacting to all manner of 50th Anniversary breakneck revelations, it was sometimes hard to see the companion behind the kerfuffle.
Which is why Season 8's Doctor switcheroo has worked so well in her favour (less flirting, more unpredictable emotional complexities), and why 'The Caretaker' was satisfying despite the occasional slip into soap opera silliness.
