The Equalizer, Sony's big screen adaptation of the 1980s TV series, debuted atop the domestic box office this weekend with an estimated $35 million. That makes it the third biggest domestic opening for star Denzel Washington behind American Gangster ($43.6 million) and Safe House ($40.2 million).
The weekend's other major new release was LAIKA's animated movie The Boxtrolls, which opened in third place with an estimated $17.3 million. That makes it LAIKA's biggest domestic bow yet, ahead of Coraline's $16.8 million debut.
The Boxtrolls was narrowly defeated for second place by holdover The Maze Runner, which finished the weekend with $17.5 million. A sequel, The Maze Runner: Scorch Trials, is already in the works for a 2015 release. The YA adaptation has so far grossed $58 million domestically and has a worldwide total of $121.7 million.
