Ask fans of video game lore what the worst game of all time is. Nine times out of ten, you’ll get the same answer: E.T. the Extraterrestrial.
The rushed 1982 adaptation of Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi blockbuster has become an unparalleled symbol of slapdash movie tie-ins. In the modern geek culture landscape it serves as a cautionary tale of artless corporate cash grabs. It is a universally derided punchline.
Of course, bad games are hardly uncommon. E.T. is unique for another reason. According to legend, when Atari realized it had made millions more E.T. cartridges than it could ever sell, the company surreptitiously decided to destroy the evidence of its folly. All unsold copies of this game -- a chief flaw of which was its protagonist’s penchant for falling into inescapable pits -- would ironically be sent to the bottom of a landfill in Alamogordo, New Mexico, never to return.
