It's been nearly a year since Sony and Microsoft launched their latest consoles, and that means that the manufacturer's warranty on both systems are coming to an end. Day-one adopters of the PS4 will see their warranties come to a close on November 15. Xbox One owners who got their consoles day-and-date see their last day of coverage November 23. So what options do you, the consumer, have once the year is up and your console is no longer covered by warranty?
Both Sony and Microsoft offer extended warranties for their consoles. Microsoft offers what it calls Microsoft Complete, which extends the warranty of both the console and the Kinect by two years. Sony's extended warranty also adds two years to its plan, bringing total length of coverage for both plans to three years. However, in order to qualify for coverage, Sony's Protection Plus plan must be purchased within the first 365 days from the original purchase date of the console. Microsoft's extended warranty must be purchased within 45 days of purchase, meaning the window of opportunity for day-one adopters has long since closed.
