How The Joker Can Work Without Batman IGN All

This week we got the official casting for the upcoming Suicide Squad movie. Most excitingly, it confirmed all those rumors and reports that Jared Leto would be playing the Joker. While it’s certainly awesome that we’re getting another on-screen Joker -- he’s the best superhero villain in the comics, the movies, and everywhere else, after all -- it’s even more interesting to think about how this will (assumedly) be the first time we’ll see the Joker in a movie without Batman. It might seem strange for the Joker to appear in a film without his arch-nemesis, but he has become such an enduring, iconic villain that he will have no problem pulling it off.


It’s almost a universal rule that a villain be designed as a counter to their hero, to attack their specific weaknesses. Metallo and his Kryptonite heart were tailor-made to be a threat to Superman. But he doesn’t hold up well against other heroes -- Green Lantern would just crush him with a construct boxing glove. The Joker doesn’t have that issue.
