Penny Dora and the Wishing Box #1 was a charming but fairly slow debut for this new series. Issue #2 picks up the pace and is a more enjoyable read because of it. Writer Michael Stock digs deeper into the mystery of Penny's new acquisition and its wish-granting powers. As you'd expect from an issue featuring two preteen girls, the wishes start out innocently enough before trouble begins brewing. Stock is able to inject a mounting sense of unease into this script without ever making the book feel overly dark or outside the bounds of an all-ages story. There's just the right blend of childish whimsy and adult worry at play here.
