Batman Eternal #40 Review IGN All

Batman Eternal #40 Who’s been messing with the Bat? That’s always been the big question behind Eternal. With the end of the series approaching in March the finish line has never been closer, and a sense of finality is starting to sweep over every page. Issue #40 is an entertaining issue packed with thrills and an appropriately noirish tone, and while readers may not be any closer to the truth, a surprising character just might be.


What’s incredible is how apparent it’s become as to just how clueless nearly every major player still is at this point. Including Batman. While the Riddler knows who’s been in charge of destroying Batman’s life, the only other character who seems to be approaching the truth is Vicki Vale. In the last few issues, she’s taken on a near protagonist-like importance. Ray Fawkes writes her quite well as a character in any great thriller who’s become caught up in a conspiracy too big to imagine. Though she’s only in a few pages, she catches on to the a big piece of the most important mystery behind this series. Selina Kyle features largely here, and her new role as mob boss continues to suit her leading to some wonderful interactions with some of her ex-associates. The scenes between Batman and Riddler are fine, though Batman doesn’t really learn anything he hasn’t already learned from the previous issue. Lastly, the final sequence in the last few pages comes awkwardly out of nowhere.
