The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #1 Review IGN All

Close your eyes. Imagine you live in a world where The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl is a comic. Now imagine that same comic is one of the best new debuts of recent memory. Open your eyes, young one. The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl is here, and she’s pretty freaking great.

From the opening, theme-song filled page, it’s clear that creators Ryan North and Erica Henderson have no intention of backing down from Squirrel Girl’s less than plausible history. Rather than reinvent the character of Doreen Green for a modern audience, the duo instead embraces her (numerous) oddities, crafting a read that’s plucky, weird, and downright awesome.

Following Doreen as she moves out of her (secret) Avengers apartment to enroll in Empire State University, writer North immediately nails the character’s feisty, gold-hearted tone. From finding empowerment through a great use of her tail to refusing to allow others to aid her for appearances sake, Squirrel Girl is 100% her own woman, inside and out. She also happens to be crazy funny, as North mines the book’s off kilter script for a ridiculous amount of gags—not only is the general wordplay witty as can be, but the bottom of each page contains additional bits of dialogue that only furthers the book’s rampant amusement. It’s almost Deadpool-esque in its oddity, fitting considering the issue’s liberal use of “Deadpool’s Guide to Super Villains” trading cards. The particular villain in question proves surprising at first glance, but Squirrel Girl’s handling of him is both funny and really, really smart. It’s the kind of superhero comic that has the potential to further the medium in its humor and wholesomeness, so truly inviting is it to readers of all ages.
