Boyhood is now available on Blu-ray and DVD.
One can’t deny the ambition of Richard Linklater’s unique Boyhood, a film shot with the same actors over a period of 12 years, but the end result is little more than an amusing experiment. As a filmmaker, Linklater has always been one to challenge conventional storytelling, be it with his meandering narrative in a film like Slacker, checking in on characters every decade in the Before Trilogy, or the use of animation in movies like Waking Life and A Scanner Darkly. With Boyhood, that same itch drives Linklater to chronicle the life of the fictional Mason (Ellar Coltrane) from shy first grader to soul-searching college freshman.
