Handhold Gaming - Where To Now? IGN All

Cleaning out the dark corners of a drawer recently I stumbled across an old, long-forgotten friend. Sitting there amongst the tangled chargers and dead mobile phones, was my red faded Game Boy Advance SP. Having developed a taste for retro gaming I charged that sucker up to see if it still held the same appeal it did ten years ago. Not surprisingly, it did. Now I find that despite owning both a PS Vita and Nintendo 3DS, it’s the GBA SP that I put in my pocket whenever I leave the house.


Why is it that I’m favouring this ten year old device over its more modern, feature-rich successors? Is it the compact form factor? Maybe it’s the quick and accessible games? It could be the great battery life, allowing it to still function despite not seeing a charger for days. Obviously it’s missing some features seen on modern day devices such as a touchscreen, wireless connectivity, and a powerful processor, but are these what makes a good portable gaming device great? Have we forgotten some of the lessons of the past in the pursuit of the ‘best’ gaming experience? Let’s check it out by taking a look back at how we got to where we are today.
