The Simpsons: "Bart's New Friend" Review IGN All

The golden age of The Simpsons is so far in the past that some people reading this weren't even alive when it was unfolding. As the show inches toward the 600 episode mark, the writers seem more content to rehash familiar plotlines and conflicts. The show still has the ability to amuse to and entertain, but for the most part there's a pervasive sense of familiarity with each new episode.


That's what made the announcement of "Bart's New Friend" so intriguing. This episode is based on a spec script written by none other than Judd Apatow. Apatow penned his script way back in 1990, midway through the show's first season. 25 years later, showrunner Al Jean decided to dust off the old script and update it for modern viewers, and here we are. I was intrigued to find out if the tone and style of "Bart's New Friend" would be more in line with the early-era Simpsons. Would Apatow's personal voice stand out, inasmuch as he had even developed his voice in 1990?
