Crypt of the NecroDancer Review IGN All

Crypt of the NecroDancer has one of the most ingenious game design twists I’ve come across in some time. This dungeon-crawler’s gameplay is fundamentally tied to its music. You move on the beat, and so too do your enemies, making every encounter an elaborate dance. Get the steps right and it’s a thing of beauty.

Of course, being a roguelike, the penalties for getting them wrong can be severe, and you can very quickly find yourself starting again. The beauty of Crypt of the NecroDancer’s central concept, however, is that every run is essentially a series of puzzles to be solved. Sure, there’s plenty of randomness, and there’s no denying that picking up a bad-ass weapon, some armour, a sweet charm and some health-restoring food can make a journey into the NecroDancer’s lair a whole lot easier, but there’s predictability within the randomness: enemy movements follow the same rules each time, so defeating them is all about knowing the steps.

Why Weren't There Any Force Awakens Toys at Celebration? IGN All

At this past weekend’s Star Wars Celebration, we did get a new trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, news of a novelization, and a closer look at some props and costumes from the movie, but one thing integral to the Star Wars experience was missing: new toys.

It’s no secret that back when the first Star Wars movie was being developed, George Lucas passed on a bump in salary in exchange for retaining full merchandising rights to Star Wars. Lucas mined the blockbuster movie like no one before, putting out untold numbers of collectibles over the years. There were action figures of everyone from the iconic Darth Vader down to the obscure Ugnaughts -- what kid wanted to play with Ugnaughts, we don’t know. The result was earning untold amounts of cash and hooking fans on the plastic stuff for life.

Splatoon: Hands-on with 1v1 Battle Dojo, Amiibo, and More IGN All

As Nintendo builds up to Splatoon’s May 29 release, it’s only a matter of time before we spray and splatter ink in single and multiplayer matches. We’ve had a lot to say about Splatoon at the IGN office. It’s a ton of fun to make a mess with ink. But it’s even more satisfying to examine the aftermath, since the stages look like two-tone Kandinsky paintings. Recently, IGN went hands-on with a few new modes and features. Here’s what we learned.

Battle Dojo, a 1v1 offline multiplayer versus mode, changes the focus from spraying up territory to popping balloons. These skirmishes unfold in the same arenas as multiplayer Turf Wars. Here, a column of colored rings indicates where a set of inflated targets will spawn. The player with the highest score at the end of five minutes wins. As a way to push for a potential comeback, the point value doubles in the later moments of a match.

Check out Google Wallet's New Security IGN All

Money stored in a Google Wallet account is now secured by the FDIC, giving Google Wallet the same level of protection as an account at a traditional bank.

Yahoo Finance confirmed that Google recently changed how it handles money with its digital wallet service. These changes now put Google Wallet within FDIC standards, which will protect funds up to $250,000 USD. This means if Google happens to go bankrupt, you won't have to go to court to get $250,000 USD of your money back. PayPal and Venmo, who offer similar services, don't offer this type of protection.

With the support of the FDIC, Google Wallet is gaining steam and starting to stand out from its competitors. You can read more about how Google Wallet allows you to process payments from when IGN reported its launch in 2011.

Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China Review IGN All

Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China is a decent attempt at converting the Assassin's Creed experience into a side-scrolling form-factor, but it lacks heart. The pieces are all there, but they are patched together in a dry, passionless way that left me feeling emptier the longer I played it.

Chronicle's uninspired story is probably the best example of this. It's stitched loosely together with still drawing sequences that bookend each level. Apparently the main character, an assassin named Shao Jun is out for revenge against the Templars for...something. The voice actors playing the two main characters sounded positively bored throughout, making it hard for me to connect my actions with their motivations in any meaningful way.

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode follow...

While Gotham may still have a myriad of issues (was that an actual cat-scare?), business picked up a bit with "Under the Knife" as Barbara -- of all characters -- suddenly became interesting.

One of the benefits of writing for a network show (meaning, a 22-episode season) is that you're often writing while you're in production. Usually only a couple episodes ahead of filming. So if a character is working, you know. You're able to see how fans react. Same goes for when someone's rubbing viewers the wrong way. And while this scenario didn't seem to help us out as far as Fish was concerned, it may have aided Barbara.

Rather than using the traditional built-in controls, BMD_ had to alter Dota 2's mechanics to allow for third-person play.

"I did completely blow away and recreate my own keyboard/mouse control system instead of using the built in Dota controls. I created my own system of motion that allows me do to things like have characters jump and strafe, and turn at an infinite rate," the modder told Reddit. StarDrive 2 Review IGN All

Where StarDrive 1 is a giant, rambling mess of a 4X game, StarDrive 2 is divided into discrete segments of varying quality and cohesion. At its heart it’s still about ship design and combat, and this time the execution is good enough that playing Space Admiral and ship designer ends up being enjoyable. But it's in service of a strategy game that overwhelmingly focuses on the "exterminate" portion of the 4X formula to the exclusion of all else, which ultimately makes StarDrive 2 feel a bit two dimensional.

StarDrive 2 lifts a page from Total War's book by having tactical space and ground battles that occur separately from the turn-based 4X layer, on which you do the usual mix of exploration, colonization, planetary development, and diplomatic negotiation. But these pieces don't all fit together equally well, and tend to get in one another’s way.

Theory: Will Darth Vader Clash with Ventress and Vos? IGN All

With the Lucasfilm Story Group making sure that all of the new Star Wars canon from the movies, comics, books, and video games all fit properly together, there’s bound to be some crossover. That’s the basis for our theory that Darth Vader will be crossing paths with Asajj Ventress and Quinlan Vos.

Before we start explaining, note that this is just a fun theory based on some things we noticed. We’re not saying that it’s true, but the idea of it happening gets us pretty excited. On to the theory!

Marvel Comics is putting out a Darth Vader series, by writer Kieron Gillen and artist Salvador Larroca, set after the events of A New Hope. The cover for the upcoming Darth Vader #5 shows Vader ready to fight and two lightsabers, one green and one yellow, crossed in front of him, as though to scissor off his head a la Anakin Skywalker taking care of Count Dooku.

Google's Balloon-Powered Internet Nearly Ready to Take Off IGN All

Google has released a new video showcasing the latest advances in Project Loon.

The internet-providing balloons are able to be kept afloat for up to 100 days at a time now, and the balloons can now be built in hours instead of days. Having thousands of balloons afloat at a time can push signal into areas that can't easily access internet services.

The behind-the-scenes video features project lead Mike Cassidy explaining the challenges faced during the project, as well as how Google has overcome them to help making balloon-powdered internet for all a reality.

"When we launched Project Loon in 2013 we hoped to answer a single question - could balloons be used to connect people to the Internet?" Google said of its update video. "Proving that this was possible in our New Zealand launch then led the team to start asking a much larger question - how can we make this work for everyone, no matter where they are in the world? How do you manufacture enough balloons to be able to provide coverage anywhere in the world and then launch them and control them so that there is always a balloon overhead to provide connection to the user on the ground?"
