Avengers Arena attracted its fair share of controversy in 2012. The series was never shy about its similarities to stories like Battle Royale and the Hunger Games, nor about flaunting the concept of teen heroes killing other teen heroes. Those who stuck with the book found a pretty strong character drama - one that didn't offer a convenient reset button or way of cheating death like many were expecting. The ordeal on Arcade's latest Murderworld left a serious mark on the surviving heroes. And that's where Avengers Underground comes in.
Undercover could be more aptly titled Avengers Arena: Season 2. It picks up very directly from where the previous series left off. It features the same duo that launched Arena in 2012 - writer Dennis Hopeless and illustrator Kev Walker. While the characters have certainly changed, little about the style or execution of this book has. Depending on your opinion of Avengers Arena, that can serve as either a ringing endorsement or a cue to look elsewhere for your teen Marvel hero fix.
