Warning: full episode spoilers follow.
Last week's Big Bang Theory was uncharacteristically grim, at the almost total expense of any humor. I wasn't sure whether to expect that trend to continue for a second week. But as it turned out, "The Occupation Recalibration" put the immediate rift between Penny and Leonard to rest pretty quickly. This was a far more lighthearted episode that didn't completely shy away from the drama caused by Penny's big life decisions. That made it a more effective episode, while also a good follow-up to last week's installment.
The writers could have mined some ongoing drama out of Penny shunning Leonard for rejecting her drunken marriage proposal last week. And while that might have yielded some interesting material, it might also have kept the two characters spinning in the same old circles they have been for years. With the idea being that Penny is finally taking control of her life and trying to act more like an adult, it was better for her to simply acknowledge that she put Leonard in a bad spot and forget the whole ordeal.
