Silicon Valley continues to prove itself as one of the year’s best new comedies with its sixth episode, “Third Party Insourcing.” While Mike Judge’s brand of off-kilter humor has been readily apparent from the get-go, this episode is the first to venture into the surreal absurdity of something like Idiocracy thanks to one spectacularly funny subplot.
The bulk of this episode is devoted to the hiring of The Carver (ie Kevin), a wunderkind hacker, to help fix Pied Piper’s cloud, which is also this episode’s largest problem. It’s becoming tiresome to watch Richard borderline on incompetent at building his own creation; the earlier problems that came along with being a CEO of a company were humorous because he was a fish out of water, but seeing him fail the last couple of episodes in his own area of expertise is disappointing. Still, Austin Abrams as The Carver has his moments, particularly at the big reveal of how he really “hacked” Bank of America and his reaction to Richard’s age of 26 (“Yikes.”)
