Black Sails: "XIV" Review IGN All

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode follow...

With last week's excellent reveal about Flint now backlighting the proceedings, two deals were negotiated this week. One leading to an amazing character moment and the other, well, stalling things a bit.

In fact, even Silver was worried about the beached Urca gold and how long it was taking everything regarding Vane and the fort to get sorted out. Speaking on behalf of the viewer, in some respects. Plus, the actual value Flint was placing on Abigail Ashe was called into question when Vane was not only unwilling to accept "the future" as a commodity to be traded, but also feared that Eleanor and Flint pleading for legitimacy would make New Providence look week and actually bring about the invasion they're trying to avoid. But Eleanor and Flint are back in full agreement over their shared-dream pirate paradise, so she used her "in" with Vane to sneak off and set Abigail free.

Tearaway Unfolded Could Release Summer 2015 IGN All

While Tweeting about his departure for studio Media Molecule, Head of Audio Kenneth Young may have teased when the PS4 game Tearaway Unfolded will release.

"I'll be working with my friends here

until we ship Tearaway Unfolded this summer. Then I'm going to have a rest!" Young said on his personal Twitter account.

Previously announced during Gamescom 2014, Tearaway Unfolded is the PlayStation 4 version of the original Vita exclusive Tearaway. It's not exactly the same game, however; rather than being a straight port from the handheld to the console, Tearaway Unfolded will feature a number of tweaks and enhancements, including a higher resolution, better frame rate, and a new control scheme.

Meet Once Upon a Time's New Disney Villain Trio IGN All

Once Upon a Time returns Sunday night from its midseason break, with a trio of new villains along for the ride. Established in the midseason finale, Ursula (Merrin Dungen), Maleficent (Kristin Bauer) and Cruella de Vil (Victoria Smurfit) will be a major part of the show’s spring storyline, as the trio team with the banished Rumpelstiltskin/Mr. Gold (Robert Carlyle).

As to how Once came to use these specific villains, Once Upon a Time co-creator Edward Kitsis explained, “Maleficent was previously on the show and we always wanted to get back to her which is why we never fully killed her. Ursula we kind of set up a little bit and teased in the Ariel episode and we think she’s a lot of fun. Cruella, we just liked her; there’s a sass to her."

Parks and Recreation's Top 10 Episodes IGN All

NBC's Parks and Recreation just wrapped up its stellar seven season run and the feels are still fresh. It's hard to believe that there will be no more new episodes featuring Leslie, Ben, Ron, April, Andy, Tom, Jerry and Donna but at least we can take solace in the fact that Parks built up a near-pristine back catalogue of classic chapters. So many, in fact, that this top 10 list was very tough to break.

7 Last Man on Earth Movies Worth Checking Out IGN All

Some spoilers follow.

The end times, they are a-coming -- this Sunday, actually, when Will Forte’s great new FOX comedy The Last Man on Earth debuts. And that’s gotten us thinking about all the other last men out there…

Will Forte’s The Last Man on Earth Reviewed

It’s a genre many of us at IGN love, so let’s break down a few of the other Last Man on Earth movies that are worth checking out. A quick note, though: While the Last Man movies almost always wind up not being about just one guy (other folks or mutants or monsters pretty much always show up), we’ve decided to keep this list to just the films that depict a character who is essentially the only guy left for at least part of the movie in question. In other words, while end-of-the-world flicks like Mad Max and Dawn of the Dead are of a similar ilk, they would not count for this list. But with that said, let’s take a look at some Omega Men. Speaking of which!

I spoke to Gregg about the introduction of the Inhumans into the series and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, what Coulson knows or doesn’t know about recent events, including Skye’s Inhuman powers (and true identity as Daisy “Quake” Johnson), the show’s darker tone in Season 2 and more.

IGN: So much happened in the midseason finale, a lot of which right now, your character is not even privy to. He didn’t see any of that…

Black Sails Cast on the Jack/Anne Bonny/Max Dynamic IGN All

Things have gotten decidedly tangled on Black Sails this season when it comes to the situation with Jack Rackham, Anne Bonny and Max. Longtime friends/lovers/pirates Jack and Anne suddenly had their relationship disrupted when Anne and Max began sleeping together... only for the vulnerable yet deadly Anne, not wanting to lose either of them, bringing Jack into bed with them. But this was hardly portrayed as a celebratory moment, but rather only muddled things further for everyone involved.

When I was on the set of Black Sails last month, I asked Clare Paget ("Anne Bonny"), Toby Schmitz ("Jack Rackham") and Jessica Parker Kennedy ("Max") what they thought about the situation and what their characters truly felt about one another.

The Problem with Going Dark and Gritty IGN All

This week a dark and gritty fan film titled Power/Rangers took the Internet by storm, sending quite a few 20- and 30-somethings into a tizzy. The bright and corny team of space ninjas was reimagined in a grim world full of things that get movies an R rating. While there were some detractors, including the original Green Ranger himself, the widespread praise of the movie, plus over a million YouTube views, shows that people love them some dark and gritty. Yet while this mature short film seems to have struck the right chord with many fans, the bigger movie productions continue to miss the mark.

12 Monkeys: "The Keys" Review IGN All

Note: Fullspoilers for the episode follow.

As a 12 Monkeys viewer, I feel like we graduated to "The Keys" by watching the first six. By sticking around, we proved that we were ready to experience our trickiest jump yet. Cole's call to Cassie was a real mindbender. He's calling to let her know that she has to get him all the information he already has so that a week from now, when his past self shows up in her future, she can maintain the present. Right? Right.

But, I'm getting ahead of myself. Which feels fitting this week. Can we talk about how adorable Cole was at the museum party, loading up on hors d'oeuvres and wanting to touch the paintings and of course, getting a very sweet dance lesson from Dr. Railly? The beauty of his surroundings are finally having an effect on our apocalyptic refugee, and he's wanting to slow things down. But Cassie is all business and keeps things on task. Well, until the dancing. They remind me a little of Mulder and Scully in the early days. Whether you want that connection to be romantic or not, you can't deny its intensity.

Maps to the Stars Review IGN All

David Cronenberg is considered the master of body horror. He films a lot of orifices, cavities, and diseased flesh. He had bodies fall apart, or be taken apart, in The Fly, Scanners, Dead Ringers, The Brood, etc. Body horror is a label that’s been affixed to him like a skin graft. But now that he’s been a filmmaker for 30 years, if you step back and take a broader view from his gaping body holes, you’ll see that his interest in the body is mostly about how the mind ruins it—because it’s always seeking more. More stimulation, more prestige, and ultimately, more separation from the body itself.

His newest film, Maps to the Stars, is about how a place can ruin the body because it stirs up the idea of the unattainable, and makes people do horrible things to each other, and to others. The place, in this film, is Hollywood. It’s an easy target, and many films have been made about the rotting nature of “the industry,” because it’s the gaping orifice that filmmakers get to see up close. But zoom out and you begin to see that Cronenberg isn’t picking at the surface scab. He’s seeing generations of nepotism, turning naturally into incest and if that trend goes even further, Hollywood will breed itself completely out of existence. As it is right now, it’s the land of freaks and ghosts.

Oblitus Review IGN All

A voice speaks to me from beyond: “A new Harbinger awakens. Find me beneath the trees.” I’ve heard this voice and its message before, and I know I’ll be hearing it countless more times. With no saves or checkpoints, such is your often short-lived existence in the bleak and somber 2D action platformer world of Oblitus. How you decide to live that life makes up some of its best moments, while the manner in which you die often highlights its weaknesses.

Finding the speaker, Mudd, wherever he has randomly decided to spawn will mean defeating a towering and fearsome boss in one of three foreboding zones. Doing so will grant you passage to the final treacherous area, and whether you win or lose, the cycle will continue regardless. This type of conclusion may feel like a non-ending, and it’s not readily apparent that one of the few things that carries over is the collection of a hidden artifact piece that can unlock a “true ending”, especially if you missed it during your run. A skilled player can get to the end in just 25 minutes or less, but rest assured you will be spending countless hours (and deaths) building up to your perfect run, and countless more with the promise of unlocking new enhancements and the true ending. Even though only a few enemy placements, side paths, and item locations actually change in each iteration, it remains enjoyable enough that you’ll be constantly testing new strategies and trying to find the best upgrades - and getting the power of slow-falling wings, rapid-fire spears, or fire enchanted armor can make your run wildly different from not getting any upgrades at all.

Secrets and Lies: Series Premiere Review IGN All

Don’t let the title mislead you — there are actually minimal secrets and lies in this incoming ABC series, debuting Sunday night, at least in the pilot. But that’s because the episode is too busy setting up the twists and turns to come. If the big reveal at the end of the first installment is any indication, there will be plenty of both in the subsequent nine episodes.

But let’s back up, shall we?

Secrets and Lies, a 10-episode American remake of a six-episode Australian original, is another crime anthology series that at the outset reveals a small boy has been found murdered, and the remaining episodes are then spent trying to figure out who did the actual crime. (Whether the series can maintain the intensity of the original without drawing it out with its extended episode order remains to be seen.)

Thank You, Leonard Nimoy IGN All

Even Vulcans cry sometimes.

That’s got to be why I’m all choked up today. I mean, crying over the passing of a famous person, someone who I never even met? It is not logical.

Except this time, it is. Leonard Nimoy had a big impact on me, on my whole life, really. I don’t think I ever realized quite how much he affected me until now, however. It turns out both he and his alter ego, Star Trek’s Mr. Spock, helped to shape and inform who I am today.

As with many, many fans of his work, my connection with Nimoy began at a young age. I first started catching Star Trek episodes with my dad -- Sunday afternoon reruns on my local station, WPIX. Soon midnight airings followed, which you had to work really hard to stay awake for. (The Twilight Zone always followed at 1am for the over-achieving nerd.) Mission: Impossible and In Search of… were also in the mix during this time, again because my Dad turned me onto them. And looking back on it, I can see in these shows many of the ingredients that now make up my lifeblood.
