The Most Impressive Physics Engine You’ve Never Seen IGN PS3

The effects of a real life high-speed collision on a car are catastrophic. In video games, however, things are different. Technical ceilings, licensing hurdles and other factors have long conspired to keep car damage relatively superficial; a pre-canned layer beneath the surface, peeled back gradually whenever the game detects the player should be seeing a few token dents and scratches.

When’s the last time you played a racing game, or perhaps an action game with a driving component, and marvelled at the realism of the crashes? For every one that gets even mildly close there are handfuls more that suffice with the bare minimum of slightly crumpled panels and scuffed paintjobs.

Miss Dexter's Premiere? Watch it Here! IGN All

If you've seen Matt Fowler's IGN review of the Dexter season premiere, you know he was quite happy with it, finding it a big return to form for the series - a sentiment shared by many of here at IGN, myself included. But if you haven't seen the episode yet, what are you waiting for? You can watch Dexter: "Are You...?", right here, right now!

Homeland: Season 2 Premiere Review IGN All

Full spoilers follow.

Coming off a bunch of Emmy wins just last week -- including Outstanding Drama for the series and Actor and Actress for stars Damian Lewis and Claire Danes -- Homeland has a lot to live up to in its second season. But if tonight's Season 2 premiere episode, "The Smile," is any indication, all those awards were not handed out in vain.

Perhaps what's most satisfying about the show's return is the fact that its characters have continued to evolve and change since we last saw them. Yes, Homeland is still very much Homeland -- tense and morally grey, with good and bad guys all mixed up into one delicious falafel of a drama. But while the show's creators, Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa, have maintained the basic elements that made the series work so well last year, they're also charting new territory for these characters already.

Boardwalk Empire: "Bone for Tuna" Review IGN All

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode follow...

So after three episodes, this has really become Bobby Cannavale's season. And let's face it, in "Bone for Tuna," we all knew there was no way Rosetti was leaving Atlantic City, for the second time, as anything other than bitter and angry. No matter how much Nucky tried to repair their working relationship. As Nucky put it so well, Rosetti could find an "insult in a bouquet of roses." And Cannavale is just crushing it. The way Rosetti not only gets offended when tells him something he doesn't know, but also when people who state the obvious is terrifying. And it was fun to see the fat corrupt cop get incinerated at the end since we all probably had him marked for death when he spoke out of turn in the diner at the top of the episode. Well, as fun as seeing someone burned alive can be. "You think you have friends. They're all dogs with bones."

Dexter: Season 7 Premiere Review IGN All

Warning: Full spoilers for the Dexter Season 7 premiere follow...

As some of you might well know, I wasn't the biggest fan of Dexter: Season 6. It had a myriad of problems, notwithstanding a criminally predictable twist and a majorly "wrong turn" arc involving Deb falling in love-love with Dexter. And while I'm definitely not an advocate of discounting a season of TV, no matter the shortcomings, "Are You...?" does its best to speedboat past that forgettable year and deliver unto us a thrilling and viable endgame to the entire Dexter saga. It's hard to imagine saying this about any show in its seventh season, but this premiere felt like a return to form, perhaps even fitting perfectly into the series, in spirit, as a better follow up to Season 4 than the last two seasons were. Plus, the cliffhanger at the end of this episode was even better than the one we were left with at the end of the Season 6 finale!

Once Upon a Time: Season Premiere Review IGN All

Note: Full spoilers for the Once Upon a Time: Season 2 premiere follow.

The end of last season brought magic back to Storybrooke and to say the town has been shaken up is an understatement. The biggest surprise was that they weren't transported back to fairy tale land; apparently, the curse destroyed it entirely – or so Regina thinks. Magic works in our world, but not in the same way that everyone is used to using it at home. Yeah, the characters have a few things to process, and the good news for us viewers is that these changes are already positive ones for the series.

Maybe as a way to mark the difference, the series started in a mysterious way. The opening sequence felt like a commercial at first; it featured Michael Raymond-James (True Blood, Terriers) in New York while Lou Reed's "Charley's Girl" played in the background and he receives a postcard from Storybrooke. Perhaps it's a sign that the town is part of our world and completely accessible now? It seems like it was somewhat hidden before. We'll see if something similar happens again in subsequent episodes - while we're left to ponder just who Raymond-James is playing.

The Best of Tim Burton IGN All

There are very few mainstream directors working today whose style is as immediately recognizable as Tim Burton's. He is a man obsessed – and many would say, possessed – by the macabre, the romantic and the grotesque, sensibilities that entwine themselves through the DNA of his every project, no matter how innocuous the subject matter.

But Burton has been regarded as a ‘one for the studios, one for me’ kinda guy, and arguably his smaller, more personal efforts triumph over the larger blockbusters. Of late, the underwhelming combo of Alice in Wonderland and Dark Shadows have left us wondering if the director can still capture his particular brand of dark magic in a bottle. Fortunately, the upcoming stop-motion pic Frankenweenie proves that not only is the master of the macabre back, he’s still got plenty of bite.

Iterative is Not a Dirty Word IGN PS3

Iterative. It’s a term that’s often used with some measure of distaste, but the truth is there’s a whole lot to value in games that don’t necessarily switch up their gameplay.

To be clear, there are games that are derivative (like Mutant Mudds) and games that iterate on a core gameplay mechanic that didn’t really work the first time (like Final Fantasy XIII-2), but we’re talking about the practice of taking a refined core and adding new bits and bobs. And that has a history of paying off. Working with a pre-defined gameplay style, and in some cases within the exact same engine as a previous game allows for experimentation and innovation in other areas that can pave the way to the next big thing.

Sony Exec: “I Feel Great About What’s Coming” IGN PS3

The PlayStation brand is in an interesting period of flux right now. PlayStation Vita is failing to pick up significant momentum, but PlayStation 3 -- led by a new, hard drive-heavy model -- is slowly closing the worldwide sales gap with Xbox 360. And a slew of PlayStation-exclusive games, long the strength of the brand, are on the horizon even as Sony has significantly truncated its roster of first party studios in 2012, from 15 to 12.

I recently got the opportunity to speak with Sony’s John Koller about all of these topics and more, and SCEA’s Vice President of Hardware Marketing had plenty of interesting things to say.

On the precipice of 64 million PS3s sold worldwide, Koller admitted that the company is “very pleased with the PlayStation 3,” reiterating the company’s stance that Sony intends on staying “in the PS3 business” for “quite a long time.” Discussing fresh upcoming IP from the likes of Naughty Dog and Quantic Dream in the form of The Last of Us and Beyond: Two Souls, respectively, Koller declared that “the development spigot is very strong for the platform.”

The Avengers: EMH - "Winter Soldier" review IGN All

Warning: full episode spoilers follow.

Picking up from the fallout of last week's "Code Red," this week's installment of Earth's Mightiest Heroes continued the focus on Captain America, Winter Soldier, and Red Skull. With the addition of the long-absent Nick Fury into the mix, "Winter Soldier" explored the darker, more espionage-influenced portion of the Marvel Universe. At least until Red Skull's giant super-mech shows up to stomp all over the US Capitol.

The writers offered no further explanation than the previous episode did as far as why Bucky was suddenly able to shake off his decades of brain-washing. Instead, this episode dived right into his current mission, which we eventually learned was trying to dispose of Red Skull's Hydra drones before his fail-safe activated. This was another area where the plot felt a little flimsy. If Red Skull had these gigantic, nearly indestructible drones lying in storage, why did he waste years infiltrating the US government when he could have caused more immediate and significant damage with these?

Surviving Being Bound, Gagged and Underwater IGN All

It's an understatement to say Kono (Grace Park) went through a lot on Hawaii Five-0 recently, as the Season 2 cliffhanger had her at death’s door - pushed into the ocean, bound and gagged, and sinking to her doom. Fortunately, she was saved by Adam (Ian Anthony Dale) in the Season 3 premiere, though not everyone was so lucky in that episode.

During my recent visit to the set of Hawaii Five-0, I spoke to Park about what the experience of being thrown in that scary, underwater situation was like – both for Kono and for the actress playing her. We also discussed Kono and Adam’s turbulent relationship and the addition of more women to Hawaii Five-0 this season.

First Details on the Next EVE Online Expansion IGN All

Chances are you've probably read more about EVE Online than you've played it. Approaching its 10-year anniversary, the spaceship-filled MMO from CCP Games has only grown each year, and the team predicts that 2013 will be their biggest yet with the free upcoming expansion EVE Online: Retribution.

Retribution is CCP's attempt to make EVE a bit more approachable, as well as update systems that just aren't working all that well. Most notably, the team is changing up the Bounty Hunting and Crimewatch systems. The new bounty system will allow players to not only place marks on users, but also corporations and alliances. The Crimewatch system will now have very easy-to-understand symbols that show you what level of crime you've committed and tell you the consequences at a glance. Additionally, Crimewatch is being redesigned so that there are less loopholes for players to commit crimes and then take actions that game the intended system. CCP loves emergent gameplay, but they really want Retribution to emphasize the idea that every action has a tangible consequence.

666 Park Avenue Review IGN All

Advance Review: In 666 Park Avenue, we meet a pleasant Midwestern couple, Jane (Rachael Taylor) and Henry (Dave Annable), who can’t believe their good fortune when they are given the chance to move into an upscale apartment building in New York known as The Drake. But their luck may be too good to be true since the man who runs The Drake, Gavin Doran, played by the excellent Terry O’Quinn (Lost), may or may not be the devil.

The shots of The Drake are appropriately ominous when they need to be, accompanied by rain or seen through bare tree branches, but the inside is a posh architectural dream. It’s at least partially understandable that someone could overlook a few odd moments with the landlord for a chance to live in that apartment.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars - Premiere Review IGN All

Note: Full spoilers for the Star Wars: The Clone Wars season premiere follow.

The Clone Wars began in a different manner than ever before this year, with the Season 5 premiere actually picking up the same storyline (with most of the same characters) as the season finale that proceeded it. Considering how big a deal Darth Maul’s return was, that felt quite appropriate. Just having the opening narration inform us that Maul and Savage Opress were committing “murder and pillage at every turn” was a reminder that this show can be pretty dang brutal - especially where these two are concerned.

This episode dealt with what Maul and Savage’s next step was – just what it was they intended to do with their lives, basically. And the answer was a surprising and fun one, as Maul declared, “We are not Jedi! We are lords… crime lords.”

And since half a century is a long time, we thought we’d provide newcomers to the show with an overview of the story so far…

More than just the Doctor’s longest running companion since the series returned 2005, Amy Pond is also one of the few to have travelled with him for over a decade (the only others being her husband Rory and daughter River, of course).

Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 Could Be Naruto's Best Brawler IGN PS3

The annual, unchanging Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm series has little to offer anyone but hardcore fans. For that particular audience, though, it’s a consistent, reliable giver. It rarely shakes up the core mechanics of its 3D combat, instead opting to improve the spectacle of it all.

Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 appeals to fans that may have been let down last time, and gives them new layers to appreciate. And all the while, it leaves those unfamiliar with the popular anime in awe.

It’s clear developer CyberConnect2 learned a lot working on Asura’s Wrath – Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 has more interactive button-prompt sequences than ever. Typically quick time events leave bad tastes in gamers’ mouths, but these are so stylish in presentation that they’re easy to love. Fights are as much about fast-paced punching as they are presentation, so if you’re not into watching a bit of action go down and having control taken away, you’re absolutely not going to fall for Naruto Shippuden. That said, battles are fully watchable separate from the game because they’re so true to Naruto’s television style.

Early Thoughts on Pokémon Black 2/White 2 IGN All

We’re less than two weeks away from the stateside release of Pokémon Black 2 and Pokémon White 2 - and I’ve been hard at work collecting gym badges and taming pocket monsters on my journey to Victory Road. You can expect my full review to show up sometime next week - exactly when is hard to say. You see, this game has a lot of content, and as with any review, I’m not going to post my final impressions until I’ve spent a fair amount of time with all of it.

But if you’re simply dying for some impressions of the first numbered Pokémon sequels, fear not! Below you’ll find a handful of my early thoughts on this new Unova adventure. And before you get your angry commenter hat on, please keep in mind that what follows are just some brief thoughts on my time with the game thus far (I have six gym badges at this point). Unless I want the wrath of Pikachu destroying me and everyone I love, I’m not able to go into too much detail or give specific examples or even mention things from later in the game at this point in time - that will come with the review next week.

Oh, April. We love YOU so much.

I was very happy to see Ben get a chance to shine in "Soda Tax." His hardline, borderline-OCD regarding office font styles and sizes just fit in perfectly with someone who gets frustrated when people get facts wrong about nerdish sci-fi and fantasy properties. Ben's not always exactly where the laughs are at on this show as he's often too busy reacting to others' lunacy, but Adam Scott is a damn funny actor and he and the writers have really been able to transform Ben into a wonderfully adorable stickler.

The Complete History of Insomniac Games IGN All

Insomniac Games is a fully independent studio, but you might not know that when looking at its catalog of games. Geoff Johns and Jeff Lemire Head to Vertigo IGN All

Geoff Johns and Jeff Lemire are two of the most prolific creators in the comics industry right now. But though they're both heavily involved in shaping DC's New 52 universe (Johns with Justice League, Green Lantern, and Aquaman and Lemire with Justice League Dark, Animal Man, and Frankenstein), fans have yet to see the two creators work together on a series. That's set to change this October thanks to Vertigo's new anthology special, Ghosts. The issue will include a short story called "Ghost for Hire," written by Johns and illustrated by Lemire.

Ghosts is an oversized one-shot featuring a variety of both established creators and newcomers, with every story featuring a ghostly theme. Appropriately, the issue is scheduled to ship on October 31. On their Source Blog today, DC released a preview image from "Ghost for Hire."
